with Scott "Chiquitico" Wardinsky
Thursday 7pm-8:30pm On hiatus in Nov & Dec. Will resume in January.
Cost $15
Scott has been a professional percussionist for the last twenty-five years. He has spent the last four years teaching at
UCLA's renowned Department of World Arts and Cultures. He has lived and studied extensively in Cuba. Scott's
professional resume includes: Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Paquito de Rivera, Billy Ocean, NuShooz, Tom Grant, etc.
He is the producer of "Wemilere," the seminal guide to Afro-Cuban folkloric percussion. He is widely recognized as an
expert in his field.
Universal Drumming
with Alex Spurkel
Wednesdays 7:00pm-8:15pm
Cost $15 or 4 (one month) for $50
Class focuses on aspects that are universal to most hand drumming traditions. African drumming and Middle-Eastern
drumming are examples of such traditions and the class covers aspects of both (many students play on djembes and
doumbeks). However, students are not bound to any specific tradition and learn how to create their own rhythms as well.
The goal of the class is to teach people to play any hand drum with confidence and flare in any situation (drum circle, on
stage, alone, etc.). Most of all, the goal is to get people to truly ENJOY the art of drumming!
Introductory West African Drumming Ensemble Class
with David Comfort
Saturdays 10:00am-11:30am
Cost $10
This class is an introduction to playing West African rhythms as a group, including parts for the djembe, djun djun, bell,
and shaker. Each class will build the rhythms from the ground up, until everyone can play the parts together as a unified
whole. The cultural context and meaning behind each rhythm will be discussed. As a teacher, David is careful to meet
each individual student’s ability and desire to be challenged and to advance. If the class is interested, a recital performance
can be arranged.
Mixed Levels West African Drumming Ensemble Class
With Fred Shangowale Jones
Mondays 7pm-9pm
Cost is $10
Recommended for students who have taken the Introductory Ensemble Class or who have prior experience playing West
African rhythms. In this class, Fred will teach rhythms learned from Mamady Keita in Brussels, Belgium during his
advanced student workshop. Students will learn the dunun, djembe, and bell parts for each rhythm. If the class is
interested, a recital performance can be arranged. Fred was born in St. Louis, MO and has been playing for over 30 years.
He is the Musical Director for Abalaye African Dance Ensemble of Los Angeles and former Musical Director and dancer
for Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago. He has been a student of Mamady Keita since 1996 and has taught Malinke
